Designing Landscape Lighting

Like most designers I am a big fan possibilities landscape lighting provides in adding a new dimension to a design’s results. In essence with good lighting you’re able to get two landscape designs for the price of one. Different side of the same coin so to speak. Its often neglected when budgeting for a landscape design because like so many things people struggle to see the value until they can see it ( which requires commitment at the design and construction stage ). Alternatively they either see it being solved by a spotlight or have had bad experiences with outdoor lighting in the past and so are therefore not willing to commit again.

The fact is that while a good budget helps, it doesn’t require massive expenditure to get effective landscape lighting. On the other hand if you buy cheap product you can almost guarantee you will be disappointed with the result. You’re putting lights out in the weather 24/7 and so will need a degree of quality to give you any sort of return on your investment or effort. The availability of good landscape lighting product has exploded in the last few years, you’ll need to avoid that place with the ‘lowest prices guaranteed’ but should be able to find some good product at your lighting retailer. Of course it doesn’t matter how clever your design or good your product is if its not installed correctly, so make sure you get some advice or help here. In terms of how to come up with a landscape design there are specialists designers/installers for the right budget or you can source a landscape contractor who is confident of tackling it. As long as you stick with Low Volt LED options you can have a go yourself ( based on the above caveats ). If in doubt simply make sure you allow for conduit throughout your landscape such as into garden beds and along and under paths so you’ve still got the option post construction. However don’t leave it too long or there is a good chance it will never happen and you’ll miss out on enjoying a potentially magic aspect to your new landscape design.
