Investing in your Landscape Design

A challenge we often face with new clients is breaking the news about how much their dream landscape is going to potentially cost them in terms of construction. While I’m finding these days more often than not people are realistic about construction costs then they used to be there is still a lot of ‘sticker shock’ to deal with.  Its not my position to tell people what they should or should not spend, instead I discuss the potential ROI they might enjoy from a well designed landscape.

There are a couple ways to look at this, the first being purely economic. In other words what dollar value will a good landscape provide the client should they decide to sell? From what I’ve read a good landscape is supposed to add between 10-20% to the value of a property. With this in mind I suggest clients look at 10% as a guide and then go from there. Obviously certain items have a different return such as pools or gazebos  and it also depends how your landscape design appeals to a broad audience. The other return is that of increased benefit to lifestyle. If you’re planning on living somewhere for 10, 20, 30 or 40 years think of how many occasions there are going to be that a great landscape design ( and build ) will enable you to take advantage of! Holidays, birthdays, late afternoons at the end of a long week, early mornings in summer, BBQ’s etc. Quiet moments on your own or loud moments with close friends and family. Invaluable if done right. Something to think about next time you’re faced with a larger than expected cost to build your dream landscape.
