There has been a trend gathering pace over the last few years towards the creation of deconstructed playspaces for kids rather than the traditional swing/slide/climbing frame set piece playgrounds. The advantage of these spaces, their aesthetic appeal aside, is that they make kids work for their play, they have to engage their minds and work together to create games and solve challenges.

Thankfully this trend, with a little push from designers, seems to be crossing over from the public to the private realm. Clients with kids are becoming open to the idea of creating spaces with open ended purpose for their children to make their own. While there will always a place for a swing or a tree house, more often then not they’ll have a lot more fun playing with the box these came in.
