It seems odd that there are not more events catering to those with an interest in landscape design being held in Brisbane. Of all the capital cities geared for living outdoors, Brisbane’s landscape must surely rank higher than most if not all capital cities. So while I work on rectifying this lets look at options to visit ( both here and interstate ) for those lookiing to hone their landscape design skills.

 

 

Ironically its Melbourne where the premier events relating to landscaping and landscape design take place. The big one of course is the Melbourne  International Flower and Garden Show or MIFGS as its affectionatley known ( thanks to Flemings website for above picture ). While the bulk of the event is taken up by retail outlets the big drawcards are the show gardens created by some of Austrlalia’s best landscape designers. In addition if you ever visit make sure to check out the student gardens where they’re forced to design landscapes with minimum budget and space for maximum impact. I’ve grabbed many clever design ideas here before. The other big event that takes place in Melbourne every couple of years is the Australian Landscape Conferecne. For anyone with more than a passing interest in landscape design its well worth attendingt.

 

Outside of Melbourne the only other nationally recognised event is Floriade in Canberra. While I have yet to attend this my understanding is that its not that stongly geared towards showcasing landscape design but it gets great reviews as an event regardless. Other than this for those wishing to visit and learn more on the subject of landscape design possibly the best avaiable resource is the Open Garden Scheme. It runs in all states ( certainly in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne ), directs funds to local charaties and unlike MIFGS gives you the opportunity to actually interact with a range of landscape designs to see not only how they look but more importantly how they feel to interact with
