While I do go on a bit about the benefit of good lighting design I think its worth reinforcing because clever lighting design in a landscape means the client can enjoy two very different designs. It’s a bit like a photo and its negative, for those that remember a time before digital cameras. Based on the same physical facts you can achieve completely different stories. Adding to this effect is the proliferation of bespoke lighting solutions for landscape projects. Below is an image of some ceiling panels done for a client recently that we dubbed ‘Milky Way’.

I think that Lump Studio from Melbourne did the most to open up landscape designers throughout Australia to what might be achieved with some laser cut steel sheet, a polypropylene diffuser and a light source. The possibilities are endless and the benefit of a light designed specifically for a client is that added sense of place making and ownership you lend to their project. Of course we strive to make every landscape design unique and tailored to suit our clients personality but this sort of addition makes for a nice exclamation mark to finish off with.
